obviously deserves a New York memorial of some sort-a statue in some prominent place, such as Grand Army Plaza, the square at the southeast corner of Central Park, would do nicely-and he certainly deserves an airport. Kennedy Airport, partly because its old name, Idlewild, was so beautiful and romantic. LaGuardia, since the Little Flower practically built it with his own hands. And it’s only right that they renamed North Beach Airport after Mayor Fiorello H. (Joltin’ Joe, by contrast, was a San Franciscan who moved to New York only because the Seals sold him to the Yanks for twenty-five thousand dollars.) Nor does it bother me all that much that the Interboro Parkway is now the Jackie Robinson Parkway, because (a) Jackie Robinson was my Brooklyn Dodger childhood hero and (b) people actually are beginning to call it the Robinson. was a world historical figure and one of the greatest New Yorkers who ever lived.
I don’t especially mind that the East River Drive was renamed the Franklin D. To some extent, these things are a matter of taste, political and otherwise. Roissy, is now Charles de Gaulle Airport, and everyone does call it that. Democrats call it National Airport Republicans call it Reagan Airport. Or was.) Washington National Airport is now Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. (I realize that the Yankee Clipper was not a politician, but Mayor 9/11 most certainly is. Does anyone call it that? You may well ask. (Wilson was one of Governor Nelson Rockefeller’s coat holders and was lieutenant governor when Rocky, soon to become President Ford’s Vice-President, resigned like Ford, Wilson was defeated when he ran for the top spot on his own.) Thanks to the bullying of Rudy Giuliani, the West Side Highway is now the Joe DiMaggio Highway. The Tappan Zee Bridge is now the Governor Malcolm Wilson Tappan Zee Bridge, though no one calls it that, either, thank God. Dewey Thruway, though no one calls it that.
The New York State Thruway is now the Governor Thomas E. This mania for renaming public works after politicians must end.
